Hikkaduwa, Main Reef

Hikkaduwa busy tourist area in south-west. Reef and beach breaks. North Jetty, Benny's, Main Reef, Beach Break, Rivermouth. Party nightlife.

Hikkaduwa is one of the main surf tourist towns, originally a fishing village now – surfing, kite boarding and scuba diving are the main attractions. Some good night life if you are after a party.

There are a number of local breaks and waves can be 3ft to 10ft when they are working.

Benny’s – left hander, reef break – works well over 6ft and for experienced surfers

Main Reef – left and right handers – deep reef so relatively safe

North Jetty – long lefts, reef break by the harbour wall

Beach Break – sand and reef shore break – safe and great for beginners

Watch out for the local Hikkaduwa surfers, fights have broken out with tourists, be super chilled in the line-up and you should be ok.

Hikkaduwa has changed from a small fishing village to an International holiday destination. Hikkaduwa main attractions are surfing, diving, shopping, and party scene. The coral sanctuary found on the coast of Hikkaduwa is a large shallow body of water enclosed by a reef, decorated with layers of multi colored corals, which is home to countless number of colorful fish. Off the beach there is a collection of tine islets surrounded by beautiful coral formations. Many species of fish and large turtles are found here. There are more than four different shipwrecks for diving enthusiasts on offer. Shopping wise there are many options in Hikkaduwa such as timber souvenirs, surf clothing such as branded and unbranded board shorts, food items, etc. Annually in July, Sri Lanka tourism hosts an international festival in Hikkaduwa called ‘Hikka Fest’, a three night long festival with deferent themes, attended by many locals and foreigners. In addition, night disco at a beach side club is a popular attraction in Hikkaduwa and a must do if you visit there. Hikkaduwa now has Two five star hotels and a selection of fine resorts. But if you visit Hikkaduwa on a budget, you might want to skip these high end options and go for a beach cabana and live the real beach lifestyle.

Main Reef is the real gem of all the surf spots in Hikkaduwa and it’s the most surfed point on the map after Arugam bay.The point also hosts a JPSA Championship every year during March-April and a couple of other local contests as well. The point can get busy during the season from Nov – April. As with any other points in Hikkaduwa, the point gets invaded by Japanese surfers. Locals are becoming more and more aggressive towards traveling surfers so the best remedy would be to stay cool with them. Local surfers and surf rental shops have put a ban on SUP in the main reef. Some believe the wave quality and consistency to have been affected by the construction of harbors towards east and west ends in close proximity.
